Where to start

Dixey Bar

Set up on the edge rather than the crown. Wind against tide can make the bay mouth stack up quickly.

The Causeway

Look for visible rips around drains, grass, and bridge structure. A shrimp beneath a cork helps avoid snags.

Middle Bay Light

Fish the down-current side of shell and structure with enough weight to remain near bottom.

What's biting through the year

Winter (Dec–Feb)

The delta's deep holes and rivers stack trout, black drum feed through every front, and the causeway keeps producing on the warm afternoons between blows.

Spring (Mar–May)

Trout spread across the bars and rigs as the bay warms, redfish crawl the shorelines, and white trout school up for the summer's easiest fishing.

Summer (Jun–Aug)

Gas-rig trout at daylight, white trout and ground mullet under the lights, mangrove snapper on hard structure, and jubilees on the Eastern Shore when the conditions align.

Fall (Sep–Nov)

Dixey Bar's bull red run is world-class, birds mark trout schools over deep shell, and flounder funnel down the channels (closed in November).

Common questions

What is Dixey Bar and when does it fish best?

Dixey Bar is the sand bar at the mouth of Mobile Bay off Fort Morgan, famous for schools of oversize bull redfish from September into November. Fish heavy jigs, big paddletails, or cut bait on the moving tide, and release the spawners quickly.

What is a Mobile Bay jubilee?

A summer phenomenon on the Eastern Shore where low-oxygen water pushes flounder, crabs, and shrimp into the shallows overnight, usually on calm, overcast early mornings with an east wind. Locals watch conditions and phone trees; nobody schedules one.

Where do trout school in Mobile Bay in fall?

Over deeper shell and along channel edges, often revealed by working birds in October and November. Ease in from up-current, cut the motor early, and a jig under the birds does the rest.

Rules and official sources

Verify Alabama rules for redfish, speckled trout, flounder, sheepshead, and Florida pompano, including seasonal closures and jurisdiction.

Mobile Bay can become hazardous quickly when wind opposes tide. Treat official marine warnings as authoritative and use the bite score only as a planning aid.
